A herniated disc
A herniated disc is a disc capsule rupture (annulus fibrosis), accompanied by a bulging out of its inside (nucleus pulposus). This condition usually occurs as a result of high loads on the spine. Most often, a herniated disc occurs in the lumbar spine, less often - in the cervical spine, rarely - in the thoracic spine.
Herniated disc symptoms depend on its location and size. If the hernia is small and doesn’t entrap adjacent nerves, it may be manifest only in pain, or even may have no symptoms at all. If the herniated disc irritates or entraps the nerves, it leads to weakness, numbness, pain and even paralysis of the limbs.
For example, in the case of the lumbar disc hernia, sciatic nerve entrapment occurs and the patient feels pain from the clunis to the lower leg and even foot. Thoracic or cervical herniated disk is accompanied by similar signs in the shoulder, arm or chest.
